HOUSEHOLDS AND FAMILIES: In 2006-2008 there were 11,000 households in Hendry County. The average household size was 3.2 people.

Families made up 78 percent of the households in Hendry County. This figure includes both married-couple families (56 percent) and other families (22 percent). Nonfamily households made up 22 percent of all households in Hendry County. Most of the nonfamily households were people living alone, but some were composed of people living in households in which no one was related to the householder.

The total school enrollment in Hendry County was 9,800 in 2006-2008. Nursery school and kindergarten enrollment was 1,500 and elementary or high school enrollment was 7,000 children. College or graduate school enrollment was 1,300.

TRAVEL TO WORK: Fifty-seven percent of Hendry County workers drove to work alone in 2006-2008, 17 percent carpooled, 18 percent took public transportation, and 3 percent used other means. The remaining 5 percent worked at home. Among those who commuted to work, it took them on average 31.7 minutes to get to work.

INCOME: The median income of households in Hendry County was $38,736. Seventy-eight percent of the households received earnings and 18 percent received retirement income other than Social Security. Thirty percent of the households received Social Security. The average income from Social Security was $15,507. These income sources are not mutually exclusive; that is, some households received income from more than one source.

POVERTY AND PARTICIPATION IN GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS: In 2006-2008, 27 percent of people were in poverty. Twenty-eight percent of related children under 18 were below the poverty level, compared with 6 percent of people 65 years old and over. Eighteen percent of all families and 30 percent of families with a female householder and no husband present had incomes below the poverty level.

POPULATION OF Hendry County: In 2006-2008, Hendry County had a total population of 39,000 - 17,000 (44 percent) females and 22,000 (56 percent) males. The median age was 30.6 years. Twenty-nine percent of the population was under 18 years and 11 percent was 65 years and older.

For people reporting one race alone, 70 percent was White; 15 percent was Black or African American; less than 0.5 percent was American Indian and Alaska Native; less than 0.5 percent was Asian; less than 0.5 percent was Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, and 13 percent was Some other race. One percent reported Two or more races. Forty-seven percent of the people in Hendry County was Hispanic. Thirty-eight percent of the people in Hendry County was White non-Hispanic. People of Hispanic origin may be of any race.

HOUSING CHARACTERISTICS: In 2006-2008, Hendry County had a total of 13,000 housing units, 20 percent of which were vacant. Of the total housing units, 48 percent was in single-unit structures, 8 percent was in multi-unit structures, and 44 percent was mobile homes. Thirty-seven percent of the housing units were built since 1990.

OCCUPIED HOUSING UNIT CHARACTERISTICS: In 2006-2008, Hendry County had 11,000 occupied housing units - 7,400 (69 percent) owner occupied and 3,300 (31 percent) renter occupied. Ten percent of the households did not have telephone service and 8 percent of the households did not have access to a car, truck, or van for private use. Multi Vehicle households were not rare. Thirty-nine percent had two vehicles and another 17 percent had three or more.

HOUSING COSTS: The median monthly housing costs for mortgaged owners was $1,034, nonmortgaged owners $392, and renters $724. Forty-seven percent of owners with mortgages, 9 percent of owners without mortgages, and 50 percent of renters in Hendry County spent 30 percent or more of household income on housing.
